I was right, and Backes was wrong. James Bookhout's image was NOT published in the newspaper at the time of his death. I received this in an email from James Bookhout's close friend, Joe Pearce:

"Charlotte’s photograph was in the Dallas Morning News 

Obituaries – Jim’s was not published in the paper."
