If they made up the story about the bus and cab, they must have known that Oswald did something else instead. And, they had to know that something might surface publicly to reveal that.
But, as long as they didn't fake any physical evidence, they could just say that they were wrong; no harm/no foul. But, how could they possibly explain finding a bus transfer ticket in his shirt pocket?
So, why would they plant incriminating evidence against themselves in the event that the story went south? Why would they take a chance like that?
That bus transfer ticket meant there could be no reversals for them. They were tying themselves to this phony story interminably- regardless of what popped up.
Why would they do that? They didn't need it. They could have sold the story without it. Who was going to question it? The press? They weren't going to question anything.
And how could they possibly have expected it to hold up in court? What was going to happen when Oswald told his lawyer that he didn't ride the bus and cab? And even if you think they had advance knowledge that Oswald was going to be killed, how could they be certain?
You're stupid, Backes. You were born stupid, and you're going to stay that way.
