Let's remember that it was a very big day even without Kennedy being killed. Just him being in Dallas, the motorcade, interacting with the people- plus the fact that it was November 1963, so just one year before the Presidential election. So, it was campaign season, and this was essentially a campaign trip.

So surely, the AP expected that there were going to be dazzling pictures to wire around the world- even without the tragedy. In other words: happy pictures. They sell too, you know.

Plus, he had his gorgeous wife with him, and she was like Princess Di.

So, would they not have been prepared with their best caption writer under any circumstances? So, how could a guy who was not a writer but a photographer wind up writing captions for another photographer, James Altgens? It would have made more sense to let Altgens write his own captions because he did have some experience as a reporter, as a correspondent.

So, this whole Carl E. Linde thing is, in a word, suspicious. What I want to see are some captions written by him that preceded the ones that were done on 11/22/63. If there aren't any, what does it mean? Did someone say:

"Hey, Carl. You want to try your hand at writing some captions today?"

"Me? I'm a photographer."

"Spread your wings, Man! Give it a whirl. Why not?"

"You want me to try it today? Now? With Kennedy just shot?"

"It's called Baptism by Fire, Man!"

"OK, I'll give it a go. But, I'm only doing it from your sake."
