Here is another version of the picture, perhaps a little sharper. It really does seem like the little girl's forearm is split off and misaligned. You do get the sense that that could be a black object behind her. It seems solid, not a shadow. Her hand does seem like it was pinkified by mistake. Also, I'll point out that she couldn't sit with such a straight back unless she was sitting on a firm surface. She is definitely not dangling in that woman's left arm.

But, it is one screwed-up picture, and I don't know why anyone would want to defend it. I'm glad it's not me who has to do it.
