This is a song written by George Gershwin for the woman he loved, Ginger Rogers. She was starring in his 1930 musical, Girl Crazy, and he wanted to give her a song that would vault her to stardom.  And it did. It was a huge hit, and soon afterwards, she was teamed with Fred Astaire in Flying Down To Rio, and the rest, as they say, is history- they became the greatest and most beloved dance couple of all time. But, the irony is that this is a song about unrequited love, and that's exactly what Gershwin got. Ginger loved him as a friend, but it just didn't reach romance for her. But, this sad love story left the world with a beautiful song that was recorded by many great vocalists, mostly females. So, why am I singing it? Because Willie Nelson recorded it for his all-Gershwin CD, and I take my cues from Willie. Here are George and Ginger.
