"I have been handling firearms for 50 years, and I thought immediately that it was a rifle shot." Senator Ralph Yarborough

He was right, of course, but my question is: how could so many trained Secret Service agents think that it was firecrackers? If he recognized it as a rifle shot, why didn't they?

And my followup is: after they registered on the idea that it was firecrackers, why didn't they move on to: "But then again, it might have been a rifle blast, and being a SS agent, I had better assume that it was and act to protect the President." ???
