There is NO WAY Oswald turned down an offer for a lawyer, and all because of Abt? The timeline shows that Oswald tried to reach Abt himself, unsuccessfully, at 1:40 on Saturday. Then, it shows that he called Ruth Paine at 4:00 and asked her to reach Abt, but she reported that she was not friendly to him, and she did not offer to do anything to help him. So why after all that would Oswald turn down an offer for a lawyer? He wouldn't. He couldn't. He didn't.
Oswald wasn't stupid. The night before at the Midnight Press Conference, he pleaded with the whole world to get him a lawyer, and he didn't ask for a particular one. Repeatedly on Friday, he railed about not having a lawyer. Think about what he said: "these officers won't let me have one." Well, he had to know that they couldn't get him Abt, so he must have been talking about a lawyer, in general.
Nichols didn't depart for the PD until 5:30. Then, when he got there, he was detained in Curry's office until the time was right, that is until, Oswald was skirted into Fritz' office for his Saturday evening interrogation. And that's when Curry took Nichols up to the 5th floor where he had hit 3 minute exchange with the Oswald double.
Then, when Curry went to talk to the press, Curry was standing there, right next to him, making sure the right message got delivered.
This was all damage control, responding to the damage, the severe damage, that Oswald had done the night before. They probably regretted like Hell they ever let him speak to the world. So, this was all propaganda. I don't assume Nichols was in on it. If he was, why bother with the Oswald double? No, I assume that Nichols fell for it, that the Oswald double was good. But, what about Curry? There is no certainty that he was in on it either, and I suspect he wasn't, that he was being manipulated too. He wasn't that smart a guy, but he would have had to be a blithering idiot not to react aghast at the very idea that they had an Oswald double. The very existence of an Oswald double tells you that Oswald was being framed. So, the plotters were probably working around Curry. That's what I think.
