  • Paul Carpenter In his report Roberts said he wanted Rybka, who was waved off, (and Warner and Lawton) to stay behind to arrange departure security. Roberts was operating radio in Queen Mary. Roberts said at 1229 he heard Lawton in lead car say destination was five minutes away. Roberts does not state if he acknowledged this message, but he did write 1235 (sic) on the itinerary.
At 1230 he heard the first of three shots. (No mention of firecrackers). After the third shot he radioed Lawton to get to the hospital. It seems he is using radio in Altgens 6. Is he confused about the time and the order of events? Could he be acknowledging the 1229 message at the time of the first shot? Did he forget a transmission between 1229 and 1230, when he called Lawton?
I can think of no explanation other than “burning in” for the dark spot near his mouth. “Burning in” is a darkroom technique used to darken an area by exposing it to extra light.
