Of course, we, that is, I, Jim Fetzer, and the OIC, draw very high rankings on this search term, as you would expect.
Still, this George Bailey is there. So, what does he say about it?
The controversy has raged for some time about the famous James Altgens photo showing a man resembling Oswald sanding in the doorway of the School Book Depository Building watching the motorcade go by. The timing is just after the first bullet strike on John Kennedy. After doing my own comparison I have concluded that it is not Oswald but another employee, Billy Lovelady. They do resemble each other from a distance and certainly from a fuzzy image. The general consensus is that Lovelady is standing in the doorway though many in the conspiracy crowd refuse to believe it. The shape of the hairline, facial features, and the pattern on the shirt all point to Lovelady.
But like all things in the Kennedy assassination investigation there is always a twist. When Billy Lovelady was asked under oath for the Warren Commission who was with him he mentioned two people, Bill Shelley and Sarah Stanton. The twist comes when the Dallas police are interrogating Oswald and he states that did not shoot the president because he was on the first floor viewing the motorcade at the time the shots rang out. As proof he gives Bill Shelley’s name as one of the persons there. This fact is born out by witness testimony of Lovelady and Shelley himself. Obviously Oswald can’t be seen in the photograph above. However, the view is blocked by two secret Service agents and a tree. Could Oswald been standing to Lovelady’s left?
So here is the rub—only by Oswald being on the first floor could he have known of Bill Shelley in the doorway. He could not have seen him from the sixth floor even if he had hung himself out the window.
He goes on to say:
Obviously Oswald can’t be seen in the photograph above. However, the view is blocked by two secret Service agents and a tree. Could Oswald been standing to Lovelady’s left?
So, like me, Mr. Bailey holds the Fritz notes in high regard. The way I like to put it is that even if you think Oswald just surmised that Shelley was out there, how could he know that Shelley was in the doorway unless he saw him there? Shelley could have been anywhere in Dealey Plaza. So, to name Shelley and to place him is quite a lot.
Then, Bailey goes on to speculate that Oswald was in the doorway but just wasn't the Doorway Man.
No need to go there, George, because he was the Doorway Man, and your reasons for not thinking so are not valid. You can't say the facial features match Lovelady when the right ear and the chin are dead ringers for Oswald. And, as Richard Hooke has shown us, the eyes, the nose, and the mouth are also dead ringers for Oswald. And you can't say the pattern on the shirt is a match to Lovelady either. Here is the latest picture that Robin Unger posted which shows the shirt clearly, and it is not the least bit plaid.
So, the shirt pattern and the facial features are out EXCEPT for the hairlines, which you also cited. Yes, that matches Lovelady, but have you thought about which Lovelady? It's the Lovelady from 1957:
So, that matches, but it's not supposed to match because Lovelady was a rapidly balding young man. You can't maintain that Lovelady's hair remained stable from 1957 to 1963. Look how bald he was by 1967:
In the end, after going to a lot of trouble, CBS elected not to use its images of Lovelady in their 4 hour special about the assassination. Why? It was probably because some wise person realized it would raise more doubts than it would settle any.
George, I'm glad you are on the track of looking for Oswald in the doorway. But, go back to the Doorway Man. That's him, Buddy. Your reasons for saying no really aren't sound. That's him.
