So, we've got x, y, and z, representing the telephone pole, the road signs, and Hughes, all pretty much in a line.

So, how do you come up with this shit with the telephone pole and the road signs right and left?

It's bull shit. It wasn't like that. The telephone pole and the road signs were aligned. They were along the curb, and so was Hughes, essentially, but farther back. They were lined up like the Three Blind Mice. 

Which is to say that they were like Backes, Unger, and the punk.
