What is the reason that we see the tool box behind Hargis in the foreground, but we do not see a tool box behind Chaney in the distant ground?

Shall we blow it up?

I don't think there is any tool box there. I don't see the back of his motorcycle at all. Honestly, doesn't it look more like a riding lawnmower?

Now, I'm sure it wasn't a riding lawnmower, but the question is: what happened to the image? If anyone wants to blame this on a development failure, I'd say it's very convenient and arbitrary. Did you know that the Moorman photo is considered to be very excellent photographic quality for a Polaroid of its time?

What I think is that what happened to the back of Chaney's bike is the same thing that happened to Newman's arm. That whole area of the photo is severely compromised, and I am not surprised that someone decided to slice it out, even though it meant slicing Chaney in the process.

So, why did UPI crop that edge off on the right? Was it to get rid of Newman with his missing arm? Was it to get rid of the back of Chaney's motorcycle since it didn't have a back? Or was it the general unphotographic look of that part of the photo?

Perhaps it was all of the above.
