Robin Unger put up a couple of better images of the Hughes doorway, this one being the most detailed:
For some reason, Roy Lewis' shirt is showing up as light blue, which it wasn't, and I don't know the reason for that. But, presumably, we are seeing Doorman behind him.
But, this image is in complete discord with the other images, including the Altgens photo. In Altgens, Doorman looks like he's next to the column, but he really isn't; it's due to the parallax effect of Altgens' position, the angle from which he was shooting.
We know where Doorman was; he was in the center of the doorway.
I was in the center of the doorway too in this picture below taken at the reenactment.
But, Hughes was shooting from down on Houston Street, and there was no such angle, no such parallax effect. So, the Hughes film is depicting a different location for Doorman than the Altgens photo (in which we realize he was in the center even though it doesn't show) or the Wiegman film (in which he was in the center and it looks it).
So, this is simply a discrepancy. And no, Robin: you can't assume that Lovelady was moving around the doorway. There is no basis to do that. There is no reason to do it. You are just pulling that out of the same place Joseph Backes keeps his proscenium arches.
