What's interesting is that Bill Shelley got to the doorway early. He was one of the first ones there. Now, if you were going somewhere to watch something where you knew people were going to be gathering, wouldn't you go to a forward position? After all, you would know that others would be coming out after you. You would not expect them to go around you, would you? The idea is to fill up the space from front to back. You would go forward so that others can file in behind you. It only makes sense.

And Lovelady said that his decision to go out in the doorway was derived from seeing Bill Shelley and Sarah Stanton perched there. He went to join them. I can't believe that Shelley was standing in the shadows then. Why would he do that?

And when it came to watching the motorcade, there was very poor visibility from way back. You can't see anything right or left. Your whole field of vision is limited to the 8 foot width of that doorway. Anyone who wanted to take-in the motorcade would definitely come more forward.

So, was Shelley really back in the shadows? Or did he just say that? Or, is it possible that he was forward at first, meaning down the steps a ways, but that when Oswald came out, he moved up to the landing to be closer to Oswald- in case he had to speak to him.

I'm just speculating here, but one thing I do not doubt is that, initially at least, Shelley was down the steps- a ways. I don't know how many, but some. He did not spend the whole time back in the shadows. If he wound up there, he must have moved there in response to seeing Oswald appear on that landing.

But, he may have been lying about the shadows. Maybe Shelley remained on the steps where he started. Look at this guy in the Wiegman film. He's wearing a white shirt and black pants, just like Shelley. He appears to be slender and very narrow in the waist- like Shelley. His height looks about right for Shelley too. Could that be Shelley?
