I finally found an image of a woman holding a baby with just one arm. But, if you think it legitimizes the Towner woman, you are mistaken.
First, note that holding a baby in one arm and a glass in the other is not a good idea. Is it less safe? You bet it is. It's a lot less safe.
However, there is a little thing she is doing to help stabilize the situation. Do you notice how high her left hand is on the kid? If she had that hand down, just coming across at the level of her wrist, it would be very risky. Then, she could easily lose that kid. But, her left arm is going all the way around the kid and then climbing up his body. So, she actually has pretty darn good control of him even though it's with just one arm. And if he started falling backwards, she could quickly pivot her elbow upward, and that would restrain him from falling. So, it's not too bad, even though two arms would be better. Let's compare her to the Towner woman.
Big differences here. Starting with the baby. On the left, the kid is erect, maintaining length in his spine and general uprightness. The Towner baby looks toneless and lumpen. On the left, we can see the supporting arm going all the way around the kid and ascending on his body to lock him in. On the right, we can't see anything happening. We know her left arm is waving above, and her right arm is nowhere to be seen. How is she holding that baby? What is holding that baby up? What is it resting on? She's not even leaning backward to get gravity to help. She's vertical, and the baby is vertical. But, we don't see her arm going around the baby, and we don't see the baby's arm going around her. Does the baby even have arms? Or is it a Thalidomide baby without arms? It's just a bull shit picture.
