Let's look at this collage again. There's no denying that Oswald looks like he is smiling on the left, but not on the right where his expression looks serious. Yet, it's undoubtedly the exact same image. So, what gives?
Obviously, there is more content on the right. There is less information on the left; detail is missing. But, what exactly causes us perceive the two images differently?
It's not easy to determine, but one thing I can point to is a little horizontal line at the corner of his mouth which we can see on the right but not on the left. Look at it larger:
Do you see on the right that the line of his mouth goes over to the side horizontally? It loses the upturn. But on the left, it's all upturned. You don't get a sense of anything horizontal.
Then, does his mouth on the other side seem to be upturned more on the side of Smiling Lee? It does seem to be going up more into a smile.
Then, what about his eyes? On the left, his eyes look very relaxed and unfocused, like he's tripping out on something? But, on the right, his eyes look more focused and resolute and serious. Why? It's really hard to say. Notice also that he looks younger on the left. He looks distinctly boyish on the left while older and more mature on the right.
The point is that they are different, and I'm not making it up. So, the question is: Is it an innocent thing that happened by itself or did it involve a deliberate effort to showcase Oswald in a pre-determined way in the newspaper? I, for one, am not the least bit inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to innocence.
