Both Lovelady and Shelley mentioned walking to the "dead-end". Well, there is no dead-end on Elm Street proper. It's only the Elm Street Extension, also called the Utility road, that ends in a dead-end. Actually, it ends in a parking lot, and that is still the case today. I parked there the times I visited Dealey Plaza. And beyond the parking lot was the first railroad track, as you can see in the diagram, and it isn't far.

They must have walked that way because if they had walked down Elm Street proper and then made a circle to the back of the TSBD, it would have been too far. It would have taken too long. Besides, there was a fence there, so how would they have gotten over it? No, they walked down the Elm Street Extension through the parking lot to the railroad track, and then they went around to the back of the building and re-entered there. That is what they both said, and that is what they both did.
