From Marty Schotz' excellent book, History Will Not Absolve Us:

When Secretary of State Dean Rusk got word that Kennedy had been killed, he went on the PA system of the Cabinet plane which was flying over the Pacific and said:

"I am sorry to have to bring you this grievous news, but President Kennedy has been killed. We now have a new President. May God bless our President and the United States of America."

What???? We now have a new President??? That's what you say on election night when your man goes over the top. You don't say it upon hearing that your current President was gunned down like a dog in the street.

Besides, everyone with an 8th grade education knows that the Vice President succeeds the President. So, there was no need to mention that at all. They all knew who the new President was.

I wonder: did they drink a toast to the new President? Did someone pass around cigars? JFK's body was still warm. Undoubtedly, some of his body cells were still alive and metabolizing, even though he was dead. How do you do that? How do you move on that fast? In one breath to go from the stricken President to his successor and start wishing him well?

That is sick. That is twisted. That is really depraved. Does it make me wonder whether Dean Rusk was in on it? Yes, it does.
