Johnny Mercer said that this was his favorite song of all time. And it's not one of his. And he wrote a lot of great songs. 

It's also one of the most covered songs in music history. Everybody wanted to record it: male and female vocalists and instrumentalists like Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman.

It's also one of the most versatile songs in music history, in which each performer could stylize it his or her own way, from slow and haunting the way Frank Sinatra did it (which is my favorite) to fast and jazzy the way Harry Connick Jr. did it much later.

This song, from 1924, is truly one of the great Standards of all time, and I have no doubt that a hundred years from now, people will still be performing it and listening to it.
