What about the lighting conditions in the photo 3rd from the left caused all the darkness above his eyes?

I can't  think of anything.  It was something that was added to conform with the look of the spectator.  But realize:  if they did ANYTHING to that photo to help the association, it screams out loud that it's a fraud. Only if the spectator were Lucien would they have done that.  Imagine this without the dark eyes on Adams. It would fall flat.
