Lyle Thielen it is possible that the car had a bad brake light switch . the brake lights would not have come on then , that was not an uncommon problem back in the day . and since you can't see your own brake lights it could be a long time before you knew you had no brake lights .

Ralph Cinque I appreciate that suggestion. But remember, this was a Dallas Police car, which got regular inspections and maintenance. Plus, it was a very late model. I'm pretty sure the Galaxie 500 didn't come out until 1962. So, I grant the possibility, but I don't give it a very high probability.
