I was just thinking about Thanksgiving in 1963, It was the Thursday after, so 6 days following the assassination. I have no memories of that Thanksgiving. I vividly remember the day of the assassination, being in 7th grade and the principal, a Catholic monk, going on the intercom and announcing to the school that the President had been shot. I remember the feeling I had. But nothing about the Thanksgiving, so I looked it up and found this:
Six days after the assassination of President Kennedy, President Lyndon Johnson addressed the nation on Thanksgiving Day, 1963. He announced that Florida's NASA Launch Operation Center would be renamed the John F. Kennedy Space Center and he asked the public to remain "determined that from this midnight of tragedy we shall move toward a new American greatness."
That message sounds to me like: don't look back; look forward. Kennedy's gone, and it's time to move on. But most important: don't look back. Because: it's all wrapped up. We found the guy who did it, and now he's dead. One lone nut killed another lone nut. And just 6 days after the shock it's all figured out; there is nothing more to know. It's time to get your mind off Kennedy and start thinking about exploring outer space. Ain't it cool?
